WHAT IS THE MAIN PURPOSE OF ELECTRIC FISHING?
The fishes bring particularly all-interesting information because they constitute real indicators of the functioning of aquatic environments: thanks to, on one hand, their position atop the food chain and on the other hand, their sensitivity to the water quality and to the physical environment integrity. Electric fishing has been used for a long time to scientific purposes or to manage fish resources (including population transfer). The process has today new prospects with the European Guideline on water, which requires the follow-up of fish to assess the ecological status. It must be used to follow the state of the fish settlements on the national scale.
The electro-fishing is also used in case of drought to rescue fish. This is often the case in summer, as shown in this report by September 2011.
